The ease with which Ogre 1 had sailed through the first three rounds of the Open FFA was gone immediately starting Round 4. The competition for the round had definitely increased in quality, although the only recognizable player in the match other than Ogre 1 was Lightking. Ogre 1 displayed a slow start, dropping to last place nearly from the beginning.
With 11:00 remaining, Ogre 1 had nine kills, which put him six points out of the top four. The next three minutes were solid, but not amazing, for Ogre 1, as he pulled to within two kills of the advancing point, but still seven kills out of first place. He seemed to slowly be gaining momentum and the top half of the match were within his grasp.
Unfortunately, the next stretch was awful for Ogre 1. Encounter after encounter ended with terrible luck, as Ogre 1 found himself picked off from behind just as he was about to finish a kill. The dry spell left him seven points below where he needed to be and 15 kills out of first place.
Undaunted, Ogre 1 shook off the streak and pushed forward. In the next two minutes, he gained two kills on fourth place; the only problem was time. Down five with 2:00 remaining, Ogre 1 needed an amazing assault. Almost unsurprisingly, that is exactly what he produced. In 30 seconds he closed the gap to three kills. A quick double kill and another tally actually tied him for fourth place with 1:00 to go. Three players vied for the last spot, however, and the placements of the players swayed back and forth for the first half of the final minute. Ogre 1 fluctuated between sixth and fourth for 50 seconds, but found himself in fourth with just ten seconds to go. As the final seconds ticked away, he moved across the top center of the map looking for a kill to seal his advancement. Nothing materialized, however, and the clock hit zero.
As the Carnage Report surfaced, the crowd around the station gasped as Ogre 1 sat in fifth place. He tied for fourth in terms of kills, but the terrible stretch in the middle of the game caused him to lose on tiebreakers. Just like that, Ogre 1′s run through the Open FFA was over. The loss proved just how daunting the objective of moving through the mammoth tourney is. Ogre 1 was definitely the best player in the round, but the nature of the beast sent him home. His opponents played well and the luck of the draw did not go his way. There is always Chicago in a month’s time.
