The 2006 regular season is over and after a year of amazing events the best gamers on the planet have come together here in New York City for MLG’s Playoff event. Nearly 1,200 gamers will be in attendance this weekend, vying for over $120,000 in prizes and the final spot at the National Championships next month in Las Vegas.
The Halo event has kicked off this morning with nearly 1,000 entrants playing in the FFA event, testing their skills as individuals and trying to prove that they have what it takes to compete with the pros. Once that event has whittled those thousand Halo fanatics down to just one, that player will get a chance to play alongside such players as OGRE1, KillerN, Cpt. Anarchy and more in the Level 1 Playoff Bracket. This head-to-head competition will end with just one man standing, who will have earned not only their invitation for Las Vegas, but also the right to play with the Top 7 players from the regular season for big prize money of the Playoffs. Karma is favored to continue his winning streak in the Level 2 Halo FFA event, but many have speculated that contenders such as Walshy or KillerN have the potential to knock him off if they are at the top of their game this weekend.
The Open Halo 4v4 event will soon begin with teams from every corner of the country competing to be the single team that will earn their spot in the Level 1 Playoffs. Most Halo fans are looking to top seeds Vanity Gaming, MoB Gamergraffix (formerly Trigger’s Down) and FBI Gamergraffix (formerly FBI Michigan) to struggle against one another for the final spot in the Level 2 Playoffs. Vanity is the first seed in this event, led by Orlando’s Scion Player of the Year Nominee ElamiteWarrior. MoB Gamergraffix has recently acquired Mimic to strengthen their slaying game in the hopes of upsetting Vanity’s claim to the 8th spot on the tour. And no one can look past the FBI team either, as they’re coming off a Top 8 finish in Orlando and have proven to consistently hang with great teams all season long. Of course any of the other teams in this division have a shot at advancing as well, considering the deep pool of talented players that have been training hard since Orlando for their chance at glory.
The Smash event will kick off on Saturday, with over 160 Smashers traveling in to compete including big names like Husband and Chillin that will be forced to play in the Open tournament after barely missing the cut for the Level 1 competition. Once a winner has been crowned, the Level 1 Playoff Bracket will get underway with 4th seeded Azen the heavy favorite to win after his first place finish in Orlando. He won’t get there easily however, with long-time pros Rob$, Caveman, Eddie, Tink and more looking to exploit any weakness they can find in Azen’s game.
Smash Doubles will also be full of intensity. Azen and Chillin took much of the season off, but returned in Chicago to defeat Ken and Isai in their first event back. While the reigning champs took back their title in Orlando, forcing Azen and Chillin to settle for second, all eyes will be on these two teams during the event. Meanwhile units like the Newlyweds (Husband and Wife) and Crystral City (Rob$ and Caveman) will be shooting for a major upset and the big prize money at the event. With the recent surge in the evolution of the Smash Doubles game, MLG fans can be sure they’ll see some great stuff as the pros pull out all their tricks to top their opponents.
No matter who wins at this event, MLG fans will be the clear winners. With more money and more glory on the line than ever before, we’re sure to see the very best from the top Halo 2 and Smash players in the world.
