In Dallas, team Genuwin made a historic run through the Halo 2 competition, becoming the first team with female gamers since 2005 to reach the Championship Bracket. In their attempted repeat here in Chicago, the team fell just short of their goal.

The teams first hurdle came in Winners Bracket Round 5 of the Open Bracket. Their match against Believe the Hype was their first shot at reaching the Championship Bracket. The action kicked off on Warlock Slayer, where Genuwin opened up to a slow start, losing the game 50 – 37 despite solid slaying from Snake. Where their tournament differed from Dallas was the team’s inability to fully rebound from a rocky Game 1 of slayer.

In Game 2, Midship Flag, Smiley scored the first capture with some intelligent flag running. Snake held down the team’s formation on Carbine side with incredible 1v1 skills. The score stood at 2 – 2 after several minutes of battling back and forth. Finally, Believe the Hype broke the deadlock, running to a 5 – 2 victory and knocking Genuwin to the Losers Bracket.

Team Genuwin made an excellent performance, but fell just short of their goal of repeating their Dallas performance.

In their Losers Bracket match against Pokemon Breeders, Genuwin provided one of the most exciting moments of the Open Bracket tournament. Pokemon Breeders grabbed the initial lead, and locked down on BR Tower. Snake held the sniper rifle, but was unable to gain any ground with it, as Genuwin trailed by as many as 8. Ultimately, a push through lower BR Tower from bottom glass by Drummer and Smiley set the gears in motion. With a few minutes remaining in the game, the action set about in a flurry.

The crowd lit up into a roar as Genuwin clawed back into the match. The score tied at 32 each with a minute remaining, and Genuwin’s momentum carried from there. They had managed the comeback. Although Genuwin would lose the ensuing games by the narrow margins of 3 – 1 and 50 – 44, they certainly provided a thrilling moment for the sizeable crowd surrounding the station.

While they fell short of their goal, with losses to the Open 4v4 tournament’s second and 17th seeded teams, Genuwin can look back knowing they surpassed 85% of the massive Open Bracket here in Chicago and look forward to another shot at MLG Orlando next month.
