Since the inception of the Championship Bracket/Open Bracket tournament structure at the start of 2006, no girl gamers have managed to progress to the Championship Bracket. In Dallas, team Genuwin look to change that, as Xena and Smiley have teamed up with Snake and Drummer.

Xena and Smiley hope to take Genuwin to the Championship Bracket

I checked in with the team during their Winners Bracket Round 3 match against Sudden Impact. Things looked grim early for Genuwin, as they started their series-opening game of Midship Slayer down eight kills to one. Some crafty teamwork at Pink 2 by Snake and Smiley helped the team tie the lead at 16, but ultimately their efforts proved insufficient. Despite a game-leading 14 – 9 contribution by Xena, who was a constant force throughout the match, Genuwin dropped the game 43 – 50. The team appeared to lack general organization, often finding themselves bunched with several players in a single, condensed area, such as Pink 1.

However, Genuwin proved their Game 1 performance was simply a slow start, unable to kick it into top gear after the long break between rounds. In Game 2, Warlock CTF, Genuwin demonstrated fluid team-shooting and communication. On the defensive end of things, the team worked effectively to cut off the opponent’s flag runs and regained control of the yellow and green flag spawns. Ultimately, Genuwin tied the series with a 5 – 2 Warlock CTF win, led by Smiley’s strong 35 – 25 slaying contribution.

Their momentum carried through to Lockout Slayer. The team started the match with a low BR spawn and quickly worked their way upwards to establish control. Gaining an early 10 – 2 lead, Genuwin forced Sudden Impact to come to them. Genuwin held a solid lead throughout the match, closing the series with a 50 – 31 victory. With the win, the team took one more step toward the Championship Bracket.
