The Final Boss vs. 5k match has become a familiar sight to fans of the Boost Mobile MLG Pro Circuit. The teams have clashed numerous times during 2007. To this point 5k, sometimes referred to as “Mini Boss,” have had no success in getting past their “big brothers.” Would MLG Chicago prove otherwise? The teams tangled in the Winners Bracket Semifinals.
CTF Sanctuary opened the series. Ten minutes into the game, only one tally marked the board, as Final Boss clung to a 1-0 lead. The last third of the game produced a more prolific output, however. 5k tied the game at one before Final Boss reassumed the lead with two minutes on the clock. Things looked bleak for 5k, as the clock dwindled dangerously toward the 15-minute mark. They made a push into the Final Boss base with 15 seconds to go and began to move the flag through the rocks and toward their base. Final Boss could not eliminate enough 5k players to slow the flag-train and, slightly into extra time, 5k notched the tying score. The effort left them spread thin, however, and Final Boss set up control of the map and pushed for a relatively easy capture to end the game, 3-2.
Game 2′s Team Slayer Lockout started much better for 5k. They spawned mid- and upper-BR-Tower and snagged the sniper rifle. That start gave them a quick 5-0 lead. Ogre 1, however, spawned on the sword and neutralized the 5k start, clearing off the top of BR Tower and stealing the sniper. After this initial back-and-forth, the game stabilized with the score nearly even. That trend spanned the entirety, with no team leading by more than several kills. Despite 23 kills to just 13 deaths from Ogre 1, 5k used a late sniper rifle to spurt to a 50-47 win, which evened the series at 1.
Game 3 launched into Midship Oddball. Ogre 1 started where he left off in Game 2, nabbing an early killing spree. Final Boss grabbed an early 0:49-0:12 lead. The teams seesawed for the greater part of the match, but Final Boss never ceded the lead. They assumed leads of 2:03-1:36 and 3:21-2:48. 5k made a push and moved within a dozen seconds of Final Boss, but the top-seeded team never let 5k pull even. Final Boss were dominant late, ending the game with the final minutes of time, winning 4:44-2:48. The win gave them a 2-1 series lead.
5k would need to counter on CTF Warlock. The fourth seed blitzed the Final Boss spawn and applied early pressure, but could not capitalize. Final Boss slowly pushed back the 5k position and eventually took control of the map. Five minutes into the game, Final Boss scored for the first time, followed by a second capture two minutes later. Up 2-0, Final Boss made sure to keep control; they nabbed three late scores to close out the game 5-0. That win gave them the match, 3-1, and moved to the Winners Bracket Finals.
