Congratulations to Carbon, the Halo 2 4v4 champions of MLG Dallas! After finishing second place to Final Boss for two straight tournaments in 2007, Carbon soundly defeated them in today’s Championship Match. This victory nets them $20,000 and a big boost of confidence for the second half of the season.
Going into the Championship Match, Carbon held a 3-1 series lead, carried over from their Winners Bracket Finals match earlier in day. While Final Boss are always an incredibly difficult opponent, the good news for Carbon was the last time Final Boss came from the Losers Bracket to win a tournament was all the way back in 2005! The bad news for Carbon was they had not yet defeated Final Boss this year in a Team Slayer match and the first game of the extended Championship series would be TS Beaver Creek.
Final Boss did not disappoint their fans in Game 1, winning in convincing fashion by a score 50-24 and continued their utter dominance over Carbon on Beaver Creek. Final Boss defeated Carbon 50-15 during the same game at the Meadowlands, perhaps the biggest TS margin of victory in Championship Match history. When Final Boss jumped to a 15-2 lead, fans might have thought they were at the Meadowlands. Final Boss found themselves full of confidence, as they had cut the series lead to 3-2.
When Game 2 started, Final Boss were unable to capitalize on their momentum from the last game. Karma put up an incredible 29 kills and went absolutely crazy with the sniper to support Carbon’s flag runners and give their team a 3-2 win on Game 2, Sanctuary CTF. This put Carbon up in the series 4-2, just two matches away from their first title in 2007.
When the third game of the Championship Match kicked off, fans fully expected Final Boss to come away with the win. Team Slayer on Midship was the gametype and considering Carbon’s TS losing streak against Final Boss, that seemed like the logical conclusion to the match. Once again, Karma led his team in slaying, posting 14 kills and helping boost his team past Final Boss. With the 50-48 win, Carbon now led the series 5-2.
Just one win from the Championship, Carbon started Game 4 with a ton of confidence. Final Boss jumped out to an early lead in this Oddball Lockout battle, but each time they attempted to setup, Carbon broke through their defenses. Unable to establish control of any part of the map for long, Final Boss found it difficult to rack up large amounts ball time as the game wore on. Meanwhile, Carbon were able to generate solid setups on several occasions and rapidly rotated the ball out of unfavorable positions with ease. Despite some sniping heroics from Walshy late in the match that helped him to a 29-kill game, Final Boss fell to Carbon, losing the game and Championship Match.
Carbon’s 6-2 defeat of Final Boss is the widest margin of victory any team has ever achieved against these pro-gaming legends and earned Carbon a cool $20,000 for their efforts. More importantly, this victory gives Carbon important confidence headed into the second half of the season and a chance to take over first place from Final Boss before the playoffs late in the year. If Carbon can generate a string of victories to close out 2007, they would have the chance to play at the National Championships as the first seed and win their second-straight $100,000 prize.
Dallas is in the books and the players are already looking forward to Chicago next month. Carbon again proved, as they did in 2006, that Final Boss are not the untouchable monsters of the Halo 2 world and there is still a chance these two-time 2007 champions will not finish the year at the top of the heap. With Carbon’s victory today, it looks as if the Pro Circuit is just starting to heat up and absolutely anything could happen in the exciting events to come.
